Mr. Steve,

Would you object if I posted some of the conversations you and I have had here to my Company's forum for the project we are working on?

Also regarding this and other documentation on this site, is there a GPLed type license or is it under some other license.

(I wont be posting comments from other persons on the forum unless they specifically said I could..my comments are fine to be posted anywhere by anyone.)

Thanks Bro.

You may repost any of my comments to your forum if you like. Please provide a link to the original context though (in case you have to paraphrase, so that people are able to see the original conversation in context if they want).

As far as other documentation on the site goes, I haven't really given much thought yet to the license. I guess, unless otherwise specified the default license is not GPL. I have no problem with reposting documentation elsewhere. Same thing as above though, if you repost substantial sections, then please include a link to the original document. This will help to ensure that there isn't out-of-date documentation lying around to confuse people.

Best regards

Steve

Thanks, will post the links as you requested. You said unless otherwise stated the default license is *not* GPL correct?

Thanks again

That was more of a "legal" assessment. In general content that does not appear to have a license is automatically owned by the creator. If the creator specifies a different license (like open source) then it will take on that lesser license.

The reason i say that the default license is *not* GPL is because I really have no experience yet with copyright of "documentation" or "written words", though I have researched open source licensing for software. Hence, I'm taking the opportunity to remain silent on the issue until I am a little bit more knowledgeable about the ramifications, lest I say something foolish that opens the door for something "bad" to happen :)

The Dataface software is fully open source under the GPL. This is not going to change. Now that you have raised the issue of documentation, I'll do some research and hopefully be able to give you a better response to the question of licensing.

Best regards

Steve

Ah righto.

Yes even with an open source license we wont give up our rights. We can revoke that license at various times as specified within the license. I do not know if we can withdraw it willy nilly if someone does not violate the license.

As to documentation I'm with you on that. Actually, though Stallman disagrees, I kinda like the Creative Commons Licenses myself. But my posting here in your forum, obviously gives you certain rights to these words. I cannot complain that your software posts what I willingly type.

But in other cases I am with you, honestly even here, I am not giving up my rights if someone were to copy and post my words from this forum to another forum, I retain my right to deny them this if I chose. Even though basically I am not...kind of a share alike clause as far as I am concerned. (only for my comments)
