widget:focus=1 and custom templates

I'm using a template to control the layout of fields on a form. It all works fine except the widget:focus=1 directive is ignored. If I comment out the group directive so the field is nolonger placed in the custom template the focus=1 works. Is there anything I can do so it will also work in my custom template?
