Dashboard Creation

Postby ibyalex » Sun Mar 11, 2012 5:31 pm

Hello Steve,

You mentioned that, there are other viable strategies or methods for creating Dashboards apart from the method you presented on the Xataface Wiki. I will appreciate if you could provide links to more articles that explains these other viable methods of creating dashboards. I do not find the method you described sufficient enough for my understanding and not being able to chose from several approaches of creating a dashboard. The dashboard to me is very important as is the gateway to my application. It is therefore my desire to explore and master its creation on xataface. Thanks.

Cheers

I do not find the method you described sufficient enough for my understanding

Can you elaborate on what characteristics of this strategy are insufficient and what characteristics in a dashboard you require that this strategy won't achieve?

Adding a dashboard will at-least involve the creation of a custom template, and likely a custom action. The wiki article shows the additional step of making a dummy table so that the dashboard can appear in the tables menu and be the default table for requests.

That said there are lots of other strategies you could take. For example you don't need to use Xataface at all for your dashboard (although this puts you at a disadvantage as you wouldn't be able to as easily take advantage of information about who is logged in etc...). E.g. You could just create a static webpage with all of the links you need, or create a php script in your apps folder but that doesn't use Xataface.

I generally use the method described in the wiki because it is the most flexible.

Thanks for your reply. I was only curious to know the other methods you meant when you said there are other ways to create dashboard. From your explanation, I have no option than to rely on the strategy you you presented in the wiki. Sticking with Xataface should make life more easier. I guess I was looking for a more elaborate or more simplified tutorial on the same method you explained in the wiki. The sample application you used to explain the method was not mentioned or given anywhere but you just brought it in for use in your explanation. Is there any demo for the sample application? Thanks for your help :) I can take it from there.

Best Regards
