Issue with File Uploads

I have followed these directions here http://xataface.com/documentation/how-to/how-to-handle-file-uploads. When I upload a file it seems to upload it properly to the database but when I try to download it comes out as corrupted. When I look in the database on the backend, it seems to actually be there. Additionally, I am having issues with getting the calendar module to recognize a datetime field. It only recognizes a date field. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
