Could this be the issue:
xataface-1.1.5r2
MySQL 4.0.18-standard

If so, I'm not likely to get the host to upgrade MySQL, what version of x/dataface will work with 4.0.18? Thanks.

Xataface should work with your current version of mysql I think. Can you provide more information about what exactly you are doing?
